Narrative: What does the clip suggest about this particular storyline for Waterloo Road? What do you expect to happen? How might the new character impact on existing storylines?

The clip lets the viewers know that there is a new character joining the show and the first impression that she gives off is that she comes from a rich family because of the car that they own and the fact that their number plate is also customised which now days costs a lot of money. The new character might impact the existing storyline as maybe a threat to the main character for example she could be a competitor for a love interest or she could turn out as her best friend.

Character: What school-based stereotypes can you recognise in the clip? How does the clip introduce the new characters in the show?

You can see that there are a lot of people scattered across the entrance and considering that the school just had a fire alarm this isn't really sending out a positive image about the school as it is showing that the teachers don't really care about their students health or safety. The scene introduces new characters such as Gabriella and her parents. Their family seems to be a higher class family as they mention that the only reason that they sent Gabriella to the school was to teach her discipline.

Iconography: What elements of the clip help to quickly introduce the school subgenre of TV Drama?

The fact that they are wearing school uniform helps to quickly introduce the school subgenre of TV Drama as it immediately lets the viewer know that the show is based in a school. Also you can see the two teachers discussing about the new student which also reinsures the viewers that the show is based in a school. Also you can see that the students aren't really listening to the teachers which is a typical stereotype when talking about schools.

Setting: How does the clip quickly introduce the school setting?

The setting of the show is quickly introduced when the students are seen with there uniform on as that immediately lets the reader know that the show is based in a school. It also quickly introduces the school setting by showing us all the different stereotypes for example there are two different groups which are the guys and girls and this is a massive stereotype commonly used in TV shows based around school.

Narrative Theory

Captain America: Civil War

The trailer for Captain America: Civil War uses many narrative techniques typical of Hollywood Action movies. Applying Propp's character theory, we have a clear protagonist or hero in Chris Evan's character Steve Rogers/Captain America - although Robert Downy Jr. character Tony Stark/Iron Man is also a major character he doesn't quite fit the role of Propp's Hero. In many ways, Captain America is shown to be the stronger character and it is his job to help prove his friend is innocent that drives the narrative. Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie plays he Helper role as the Captains close friends. These well known character types quickly help establish the Action genre and allow audiences to understand the main plot within the two-minute running time of the trailer.

The film's narrative is clearly introduced in the trailer and follows Todorov's theory of equilibrium. The state of balance is the character of Steve Rogers trying to get his friends innocence after being in mind control and hypnosis. The introduction of Tony Stark/Iron Man creates the disequilibrium - along with the fact that he is going against Captain America (His former teammate). The new equilibrium is not shown in the trailer - this is critical because even though a standard Hollywood would suggest that the main Hero of the movie ends up getting what he wants in this case getting his friends innocence , the audience have to watch the whole film to enjoy this resolution.

The trailer is full of Barthes' enigma and action codes. These are designed to draw the audience in and encourage them to watch the whole film to resolve their questions. The major enigma codes the audience will consider revolve around whether the team end up getting back together or if Bucky gets his innocence.   However, there are other enigma codes such as who are the new characters introduced in the movie for example Spider-Man and Black Panther. There are a lot of action codes in Civil War for example the massive airport fight scene of which a few seconds are shown in the trailer. This suggests there will be a reason which is good enough for them to start a Civil War this leaves audiences wondering what starts this ?

Representation of Captain America

The representation of Captain America: Civil War

The representation of men in Captain America Civil War reinforces traditional gender stereotypes. The movie stars Chris Evans as Captain America who is the stereotypical male hero. He is smart, strong, fast and brave as seen in 1:06 into the trailer which is exactly what is expected of a typical superhero. Also in the trailer there are use of sidekicks who are black this is stereotypical as black actors are usually cast as sidekicks such as Samuel L. Jackson in Die Hard 3 this is seen 1:25 in the trailer. Also in superhero movies the hero usually always has a love interest although not shown in this trailer there where hints towards her in the last movie. There is also the other superhero stereotype which involves a women who is not a love interest of the protagonist but a really close friend of his this is shown 50 seconds into the movie. Last but not least one of the main plots in a superhero movie is the villain however Civil war doesn't really have a villain but rather it has the twist of two friend turning on each other as seen at 2:00 exactly.

1) What typical features (conventions) of a film poster have you used? How do they help to make the poster effective in attracting an audience? (Key conventions include title, release date, institutional information, reviews, a central image etc.)

First of all I used a central image which is the main character to immediately get the readers attention as he is wearing all black and has a mask covering his face. This will make the audience question why he is dressed like that and that will make them want to find out more about the movie which could lead to them watching the movie. I also included an age rating to let the audience know what age you have to be to view the movie. This would let the reader know that there is most likely to be action such as gunshots and car crashes.

2) What is the genre of your film? How would your target audience know this from design of your poster? E.g. Colour scheme, font choice, mise-en-scene (props, costume, character, setting).

The genre of my film is science fiction/horror. I have signified this by using dark colours which are usually used to show fear and horror there is some light shades of green in the poster to show that it is science fiction as when blended with the black that's exactly what it shows. Who can also tell that it is horror because of the setting which is a dark creepy forest. My character is wearing all black clothes to emphasise that there is something creepy and mysterious going on. My character is also holding a camera in his hand and that is something that will raise questions as people will wonder why he is holding a camera and why he need one.

3) What institutional information have you used to try and sell the film and how does this appeal to the audience? E.g. 'From the Producers of...' / Star power / Directors / Reviews.

I have used the logo of Lions-gate to sell my film as they are really well known across the world for there great movies. When someone sees the logo they immediately recognise it and this may make them want to see the movie. From the quote "Voted best movie of the year" it will almost always attract peoples attention because to be voted best movie of the year you are against about 600 other movies and that is a really good achievement Evan if you do not win.

What representations have you used in your film? E.g. gender / race / age / nationality / place)? Are these reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?

I have left the eyes and slight part of the face exposed to show the audience that the antagonist is Asian. This may come of as surprising because there are not many Asians in Hollywood so people may expect something different than usual movies. The character is about 18 and this will attract more 18 years because some of them may feel that they can relate to this character in the movie. The character in the movie is a male for this purpose the movie may attract more male viewers than female viewers.

4) Where are there examples of synergy between your storyboard and trailer? (Synergy is the link or interaction between two different media texts).

There is synergy between my poster and my story board for example I have made sure that I mention Lions gate in my story board as well as my poster because they will get my movie recognised more. I have also mentioned the quotes from my poster in my story board because they are very key in getting my movie promoted and just recognised overall. I also mentioned the name of the movie because it is very vital you don't forget that because than people will watch the trailer and not know the name of the movie which will be really bad. Finally I have used my production blurb in both poster and the storyboard because it is vital to use that because than the audience will know all the actors and directors who took part in the movie.

Trailer Conventions:

Intro to Characters: Straight away the audience who are viewing the trailer are introduced to some of the characters in the movie. The director doesn't need to introduce the name of the characters as they where all in the previous Captain America movie.

Iconography: Just after the intro to the characters, there is a scene where a building gets blown up this is a type of iconography and will help attract a lot of people who are interested in action movies as iconography comes under the genre.

Fast Paced Cuts: There are a lot of fast paced cuts which create a lot of tension and this will always leave the viewer wondering what happened next which is a great way to get people to watch your movie.

Voice Over: There is a voice over in the trailer along with all the iconography which always makes the trailer a lot more dramatic and will catch more attention.

Title: When a person thinks of the title Captain America they think what a huge success the first 2 films were so when someone starts talking about a third film a person who is a fan of the first two will definitely want to go and watch the film.

Poster Conventions:

Release Date: The release date is shown in the poster "May 6" this will let anyone who sees the trailer will know straight away when the movie is out sob they can go and watch.

Central Image: The central image suggest that their is conflict between the two side as they are two different colours and also the way that they are staring at each other will also let the viewer know that there will be a fight in the movie.

Cast: The main cast in the movie Chris Evans and Robert Downey JR will immediately catch the eye of people who are viewing this poster because those 2 actors are well known for there award winning movies.

Title: The title Civil War is placed in the middle of the poster so viewers will immediately see this when they see the poster and this will help the movie get recognised more by different people and will help spread the movie.

NCIS Analysis

Kong: Skull Island

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy and Scientific.

Narrative: The story line clearly shows a group of scientist along with a group of soldiers heading towards am Island crawling with prehistoric animals. This fits all the genres perfectly.

Character: The characters are recognised very widely as they are some of Hollywood's greatest actors such as Sam L Jackson and Tom Hiddleston this alone will attract a lot of people as they have some outstanding and award winning movies. Also the movie includes the classic King Kong which is a giant ape and like the last movie he seems interested in the girl who is starring in the movie.

Iconography  Their is plenty of iconography as you can see in the trailer there are gunshots bombs violence, running, screaming. All of these are typical of a action movie and also typical of a King Kong.

Setting: Although the trailer is only 2 minutes long but in the 2 minutes you can clearly tell that they are on an island searching for something also at the start of the trailer you can see that they are also in a lab at at the start which adds into the scientific genre.

e

Genre: Horror

Narrative: The story line clearly shows that there is an old blind man who is being robbed by three younger teenagers. But the quick robbery turns into a murder scene.

Character: The characters are not really that well known as they have only appeared in about 1 or 2 well known movies. The story-line is not that typical for a horror story either as most horror stories include maybe a young boy or girl being targeted by a demon or a group of friends being killed one by one.

Iconography: Their is not really that much iconography in this movie as it is based in a house but there is one point in the trailer where there is a gunshot these could lead to more bigger iconography in the movie. There is a lot of shouting which would link to the genre of this movie being a horror movie.

Setting: The setting as you can see in the trailer is based in the house of the old man this is typical for some horror movies as a lot of them are based in a house but at the start of the movie you can see that they are in someone else house most likely one of the teenagers house.

Genre: Scientific, Fantasy and action.

Narrative: The story line clearly is that there is a doctor who gets into an accident damaging his hands and it looks like he finds a mystical way to heal himself.

Character: The characters in this movie are typical of Hollywood they have been in some good movies especially the star Benedict Cumberbach. The characters in the trailer are typical of marvel as there is a normal person who turns into a hero.

Iconography: There is not alot of iconography in this movie there is alot of action but not much gunfire or violence there is a car crash in the beginning which shows how he damaged his hands in the first place this is some form of iconography.

Setting:  The setting looks like it is based somewhere in mountains but at the start there is a scene where he is in his house with his wife and a scene of him in the hospital too which shows him with a patient.
