Representation of Captain America

The representation of Captain America: Civil War

The representation of men in Captain America Civil War reinforces traditional gender stereotypes. The movie stars Chris Evans as Captain America who is the stereotypical male hero. He is smart, strong, fast and brave as seen in 1:06 into the trailer which is exactly what is expected of a typical superhero. Also in the trailer there are use of sidekicks who are black this is stereotypical as black actors are usually cast as sidekicks such as Samuel L. Jackson in Die Hard 3 this is seen 1:25 in the trailer. Also in superhero movies the hero usually always has a love interest although not shown in this trailer there where hints towards her in the last movie. There is also the other superhero stereotype which involves a women who is not a love interest of the protagonist but a really close friend of his this is shown 50 seconds into the movie. Last but not least one of the main plots in a superhero movie is the villain however Civil war doesn't really have a villain but rather it has the twist of two friend turning on each other as seen at 2:00 exactly.

1) What typical features (conventions) of a film poster have you used? How do they help to make the poster effective in attracting an audience? (Key conventions include title, release date, institutional information, reviews, a central image etc.)

First of all I used a central image which is the main character to immediately get the readers attention as he is wearing all black and has a mask covering his face. This will make the audience question why he is dressed like that and that will make them want to find out more about the movie which could lead to them watching the movie. I also included an age rating to let the audience know what age you have to be to view the movie. This would let the reader know that there is most likely to be action such as gunshots and car crashes.

2) What is the genre of your film? How would your target audience know this from design of your poster? E.g. Colour scheme, font choice, mise-en-scene (props, costume, character, setting).

The genre of my film is science fiction/horror. I have signified this by using dark colours which are usually used to show fear and horror there is some light shades of green in the poster to show that it is science fiction as when blended with the black that's exactly what it shows. Who can also tell that it is horror because of the setting which is a dark creepy forest. My character is wearing all black clothes to emphasise that there is something creepy and mysterious going on. My character is also holding a camera in his hand and that is something that will raise questions as people will wonder why he is holding a camera and why he need one.

3) What institutional information have you used to try and sell the film and how does this appeal to the audience? E.g. 'From the Producers of...' / Star power / Directors / Reviews.

I have used the logo of Lions-gate to sell my film as they are really well known across the world for there great movies. When someone sees the logo they immediately recognise it and this may make them want to see the movie. From the quote "Voted best movie of the year" it will almost always attract peoples attention because to be voted best movie of the year you are against about 600 other movies and that is a really good achievement Evan if you do not win.

What representations have you used in your film? E.g. gender / race / age / nationality / place)? Are these reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?

I have left the eyes and slight part of the face exposed to show the audience that the antagonist is Asian. This may come of as surprising because there are not many Asians in Hollywood so people may expect something different than usual movies. The character is about 18 and this will attract more 18 years because some of them may feel that they can relate to this character in the movie. The character in the movie is a male for this purpose the movie may attract more male viewers than female viewers.

4) Where are there examples of synergy between your storyboard and trailer? (Synergy is the link or interaction between two different media texts).

There is synergy between my poster and my story board for example I have made sure that I mention Lions gate in my story board as well as my poster because they will get my movie recognised more. I have also mentioned the quotes from my poster in my story board because they are very key in getting my movie promoted and just recognised overall. I also mentioned the name of the movie because it is very vital you don't forget that because than people will watch the trailer and not know the name of the movie which will be really bad. Finally I have used my production blurb in both poster and the storyboard because it is vital to use that because than the audience will know all the actors and directors who took part in the movie.
